Rotator Cuff Exercises - Can They Help You Avoid Surgery?

Rotator Cuff Exercises Can Help You Heal Naturally
Can rotator cuff exercises help heal your injured shoulder? Your doctor may have recommended surgery, rotator cuff exercises or a combination of both. There is a possibility you may be able to heal your shoulder naturally, without surgery, if you follow a strict and properly designed therapy program.

Your rotator cuff is comprised of many smaller tendons and muscles that are prone to injury. Tendons are usually very strong, but when exposed to repetitive stressful motions, especially overhand motions, sometimes inflammation occurs. Resting the inflamed tendons is crucial, otherwise a tear may follow. A sudden fall where you catch yourself with an outstretched hand is also a common cause.

Only use light weights and high repetitions when working the small muscles of the rotator cuff. Each exercise should be performed with about 14-16 reps. As the shoulder gets stronger you can eventually progress to around 20 reps or so. When learning new exercises, it's important to understand the proper form. Make sure you consult with a medical professional before starting any rotator cuff exercise program.

Stretching should be added to any good rotator cuff exercise program. Stretching is very helpful for circulation and mobility. Anything you can do to improve blood flow to the area (stretching, massage, heat, etc.) will speed up the healing process.

By slowly and progressively strengthening the rotator cuff through intelligent physical therapy, it may be possible to heal the injury. The good news is that there are several good rehab programs that will help you heal it naturally... hopefully without surgery or other intrusive methods.

Rotator cuff injuries sometimes take a while to heal. Make sure you are committed to any therapy you undertake and stay consistent. It's very possible it could take up to a year to get full use of your shoulder back. Exercises, if done properly, can do wonders for healing and strengthening your shoulder.

When researching an exercise rehab program for your rotator cuff, be careful not to be tempted to start experimenting with random exercises you read about. Healing must be done in a progressive and orderly manner in order to avoid aggravating the injury. By following the advice of a specialist in rotator cuff exercises and rehabilitation, you greatly improve your odds of naturally healing your shoulder... hopefully without the need for surgery or other intrusive methods.
